Ultra-Ternative 2025
With the big Five Zero heading its way next year it is time to take some bold steps. We all know the cycling world is a little upside down at the moment and who knows what the future is going to hold.
Taking a break from work and stepping back to ride my bicycle in the ULTRA-TURNATIVE Project 2025 is an aim that seems to have been in the back of my mind for some time. Exploring the world on a bicycle, tackling various ultra rides and tours, I hope will be a transformative experience, one that combines adventure, simplicity, and personal growth. Cycling allows us to connect with our surroundings in a way no other mode of travel can. Pedaling through diverse landscapes, from bustling cities to serene countryside, the bicycle allows oneself to be immersed in the rhythm of the journey, far removed from the pace of modern work life.
The beauty of cycling exploration lies in its flexibility. With just a bike, some essential gear, and a map or GPS, the world opens up as a playground of endless possibilities. Each day presents a new challenge and discovery, whether it’s navigating unfamiliar roads, meeting local communities, or witnessing breathtaking sunsets. The physicality of cycling enhances this experience, grounding you in the present moment as you conquer hills and revel in long, smooth descents.
Making such a big change and plunging in at the deep end for such an adventure is a bold move that often leads to profound personal insights. It provides time to reflect on priorities, explore passions, and build resilience. Living minimally, carrying only what you need, fosters gratitude and appreciation for the simple things—clean water, a warm meal, or the kindness of strangers.
Financial planning and careful preparation has been essential and this is why I am aiming to batchbuild a small amount of frames in between travels with the odd custom bicycle as and when suitable. I am also aiming to document my travels through writing, photography and short films, creating a narrative to share with others and preserve memories for this once in a lifetime opportunity. The year ahead would not be possible without help from supporters such as Reynolds Technology, Schwalbe, BETD and Ultimate USE. To those that have bought t-shirts and patches in the past I thank you. Other like-minded cyclists who have kindly offered their support with this project, this could not have been done without you as well.
Ultimately, a year of cycling exploration is about freedom. It’s a chance to step off the treadmill of work and responsibilities, rediscover the joy of movement, and see the world through fresh eyes. When the year concludes I am hoping for a renewed purpose and lust for life, carrying unforgettable stories and a broadened perspective. While I am hoping to accomplish all of the above I am also hoping to be able to understand more about what the bicycle means to so many, myself included. Building frames and working as a bicycle mechanic is only part of what makes this such a persoanl cycling adventure and the simplicity of accomplishing this on a bike that I have built myself that more enjoyable. It is almost a philosophy and way of life, more than just a means of transport.
